Mercedes SL 2022: exit from the crisis

It was about time... One of the most iconic and desirable cars of recent decades is getting back on its feet to come back in a version that is finally becoming attractive again. Indeed, and since the end of the 2000s, the SL had largely suffered from a lack of attention from the brand to the star, which then seemed to be content to sell SLRs or even the E-Class cabriolet in turn. of arms.
Because since the 2008 model and its most dubious restyling, the SL was the type to be shunned by customers but also by discussions among car enthusiasts. The version of 2013, a little clumsy, had also continued the descent into hell, and this despite Mercedes' desire to raise the bar (it was in any case much better than the botched restyling of 2008). Alas, with its somewhat heavy line which was the antithesis of the name SL (Light Sport), it completely missed out on any commercial success. Also making the link between two generations of Mercedes styles, it must be said that it had inherited a somewhat bastard physique which made its identity a bit cloudy.

In short, all this is in the past because Mercedes seems to have taken the bull by the horns, with the firm intention of exploding the competition. And it is for my part appreciable because the SL of 89 and 2001 had for my part embodied the ideal car, neither more nor less. And yet I was not very old at that time, showing that the SL also managed to seduce the youngest (who were clearly not its target of course). It's a car that combined exclusivity (you don't come across it everywhere ..), sportiness (more in its looks than on the road, of course), relative practicality (it wasn't a strict two-seater) and quality. of product (nothing came close to their ankle). How sad it was to see his subsequent downfall once again.

Already very exclusive in past years, it now seems to be positioning itself even higher in this future year 2022, the year of its marketing.
Mercedes announces the color by offering only two versions: 55 and 63 AMG, positioning it almost like an AMG GT. Funny nomenclature when you know that the SL is positioned more like a GT than the AMG GT. In addition, with wheelbases of 2.63 (AMG GT) and 2.7 meters (SL), we remain only something relatively close (length of 4.55 and 4.71 respectively), in any case enough to risk cannibalization in the range.

Technically speaking the car weighs around 1900 kg, enough to raise fears in terms of dynamism... However, it must be recognized that at present this type of machine remains very rigorous, due to very generous tires in width but also by the adoption of a steering rear axle in the case of the SL presented here.
Its chassis would have been developed by AMG, like the SLS or the AMG GT for example. Of course, that smacks a bit of marketing, because I have no doubt that the in-house engineers at Mercedes (and besides, AMG is Mercedes if we want to be objective, because since 2005 it belongs to them 100%) are just as competent, especially if
